Therapy and Self-Discovery: Unveiling Your True Self

Abundance and Its Missing Piece: Uncovering What Truly Matters

I started my journey in therapy in January 2022.

Many people view therapy skeptically, considering it unnecessary or a luxury.

“There are more serious problems”.

Sure, there are more serious problems out there.

But chances are that if you are reading this text, you likely enjoy a world of physical abundance where basic needs are met effortlessly.

Let me give you some examples of abundance and physical things you have at your disposal every day:

  • Water — You simply need to turn on the tap

  • Food — Groceries store around the corner with affordable food

  • House — The comfort of sleeping under a sturdy roof in a cozy bed

  • Education — You probably went through high school and eventually pursued a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or even doctorate)

These are usually considered serious problems, and they are.

So what’s missing for you? Why should one go to therapy?

In other words, why should you not feel good about your life when all your basic needs are met (if not exceeded)?

Embracing Identity: Navigating Questions That Define You

Amidst this abundance, an essential aspect can't be overlooked—figuring out what truly matters to you.

  • Who do you aspire to be?

  • What is meaningful for you?

  • What is your role in this world?

  • What does your future look like?

  • What values shape your existence?

  • Where can you contribute best? In which field?

  • What are your strengths and your weaknesses?

These are all the fundamental questions that stir the core of your identity.

While some might dismiss these questions as philosophical musings, embracing them is the path to a life free of regrets.

External influences, even if well-intentioned, often fall short.

Because you may have used to think what others (family, society, etc.) thought for you would be best.

Even if they do it with their best intentions, following their indications, you may find that things usually don’t work out.

You may feel kind of empty, wondering if a holiday or financial success can fill the void.

The truth is nobody has a definite answer to who they are and what they want to do for the rest of their lives.

The Journey Within: Personal Growth through Self-Reflection

That's why it's crucial to continually check in with yourself, reassess your values, and adjust your trajectory accordingly.

Embrace the changes you undergo without discarding the person you've become.

Preserve the aspects you cherish while shedding those that no longer align with your newfound direction.

And in this journey of self-discovery, having someone to confide in can make all the difference.

While friends and family can offer support, professional therapists possess the tools and emotional distance necessary to guide you effectively.

However, therapy sessions are just the beginning—the real work lies within you.

In this pursuit of personal growth, remember to:

  • Love yourself fiercely.

  • Nurture the light within.

  • Protect the fire that ignites your passions.

You are stronger than you seem.

You are smarter than you think.

You are braver than you believe.

Prioritize your mental health because it truly matters.
